How to easily stuff foam into a pillow or mattress cover?

If you've ever tried to pull a fabric cover directly over bare foam, you've probably noticed that it's a real challenge. The fabric gets stuck, bunches up, and the final look is rough and uneven. That's where a special knit mesh comes in handy, usually simply called stockinette, it helps to stuff foam into cover easily.

What is this?

It is a highly elastic, thin and slippery tubular mesh made of a polyester (sometimes cotton) blend. It acts as an intermediate layer between the foam filling and the main upholstery fabric.

What is it for and why does it help you stuff foam into cover easily?

1. Easy to put on: This is its main function. The stockinette creates a slippery surface, so even a very tight cover slides onto the foam without much effort. This is especially important when working with large patio cushions or furniture of more complex shapes.

2. Shape retention: It slightly compresses the foam and helps it spread evenly inside the cover. This prevents the fabric from wrinkling and gives the pillow a finished shape.

3. Fabric Protection: The stockinette acts as a protective barrier. It reduces friction between the coarser texture of the foam and the luxurious outer fabric. This means your cushions will last longer because the fabric on the inside won’t rub or wear.

4. Aesthetics: Using this layer makes furniture corners and edges look much neater and more professional.

How to use it?

Using it is easier than it looks:

• Cut: Cut a piece of mesh longer than your pillow filling.

• Put it on: Hold the mesh like a round bagel and simply slide it over the foam (just like putting a sock on your foot).

• Secure: You can fold the ends over slightly or just leave them as is – they will snap into place once the main fabric is pulled over. If the cover is thin, you can glue the edges of the mesh to the ends of the foam using textile glue.
